We're highlighting the shortlisted salons in our competition in the News & Star. Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues.
The Ugly Duckling Beauty has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of the ten finalists in its 'Best Beauty Salon 2024' award.
The salon, located on Carlisle's Earl Street is owned by Lucy Gordon who opened her business in 2020, two weeks before the first Covid-19 lockdown.
After being informed that The Ugly Duckling had been chosen by News & Star readers to feature in the final ten of the 'Best Beauty Salon 2024' award, Lucy was on hand to express her delight.
She said: "I am absolutely over the moon. I would love to say a massive thank you to all of my clients who support my business and also support my family alongside that.
"I am a one-man band so every time someone comes it is not just supporting me, it goes further, I have got two children so it is massively heartfelt.
At her salon, Lucy offers a wide range of treatments as well as her popular relaxation packages and it is this, coupled with her love for her work that she believes has made The Ugly Duckling a local favourite.
She said: "Treatment-wise I do a lot of beauty as well as relaxation stuff, I think a lot of my clients know me for relaxation packages and that is what I have a lot of interest in.
"I also do all of your lashes, nails, skincare, micro-needling, and cupping so it is very varied.
"I think the salon is a welcoming and friendly place, I do make genuine friendships with clients and I think that does make a difference.
"When people come for the first time it can be quite a daunting and vulnerable experience but I love being able to put people at ease and I love when people enjoy the treatments but also enjoy you as a person.
"I obviously do my job because I love it and I never feel like I am coming to work, I genuinely love each day and I work long hours but it is all worth it."
