A West Cumbrian woman has announced the opening of a new day centre and warm hub for vulnerable people later this month, plugging a gap left when a charity pulled out of the area.
Leanne Macdonald, one half of the CIC Happy Hearts Adult Day Services with Emma Wilson, will begin running the hub at the St Mary’s Church in Harrington on October 21.
“I decided to try and fill the void created in our local services,” Ms Macdonald said, saying the closure of Age UK West Cumbria in Copeland and Allerdale had a ‘huge impact’.
“We just decided to go for it, and with everything that’s happened recently, such as the winter fuel payments being cut, we thought we’d expand and make it bigger,” she explained.

The centre will offer a variety of games and activities, a healthy balanced meal and snacks and a warm safe space, with a capacity for up to 30 users a day for five days a week.
