A FARM worker tragically died after getting out of a tractor which then began to move and collided with him, an inquest has heard.
Tributes were paid following the death of Daniel Sowerby, a 26-year-old man who grew up in Bassenthwaite and latterly lived at Thursby, near Carlisle.
Daniel died on September 11 this year following an incident on the B5299 between Boltongate and Snowhill, west of Caldbeck.
He was described by his family in a tribute released by Cumbria Police as a “cheeky chappy” and “true gentleman”.
They also said: “He was loving, hardworking and just an all-round delight to be around. His infectious laugh and smile would light up any room.
“He was one of the kindest souls you would ever meet. We speak for everyone when we say he will be well and truly missed. We all love you forever Dan.”
An inquest into Daniel’s death was opened at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court earlier today (Tuesday).
Dr Nicholas Shaw, an assistant coroner for Cumbria, observed during a short hearing that he was a single man and a farm worker.
Outlining some brief circumstances of the tragic incident, Dr Shaw said: “His death occurred while he was at work. He had been working with a tractor and it seems that having alighted from the tractor it began to move, colliding with a wall and also with Daniel. He sustained injuries that proved to be fatal.”
Formal identification has been provided by a friend.
Dr Shaw suspended the inquest.
“Suspension allows time for an investigation by health and safety because this is, on the face of it, a work-related accident,” he explained.
“When that investigation is complete we will return to the case to see whether we would be required to restart it and hold a formal inquest.
“At the moment the case is open but suspended.”
