A MAJOR fundraising drive is being launched to raise £200,000 and save 'a hidden piece' of Workington's social history.

The Our Lady & St Michael's Church at Banklands will officially launch a major fundraising campaign this weekend in a special event.

The fundraising drive aims to raise £200,000 to restore and breathe new life into the church's wonderful Grade II listed Hill Pipe Organ.

It is now in need of urgent repair to be restored to its former glory, otherwise the church say it will be lost forever.

Built by Arthur Hill, a highly respected firm of the time, the pipe organ is exceptional since it has retained all of its original features and has been listed with a Grade II designation on account of its significance.

The instrument is of national historic significance and was installed in 1906.

The pipe organ is at the heart of services and recitals in the church, but 'is a hidden piece of Workington's social history, and it hasn't got much time left'.

When it's gone, it cannot be replaced and the church say they 'really want to save it for future generations, so people's children and grandchildren can continue to hear this wonderful instrument'.

Parish priest Fr Philip Conner said: "The Pipe Organ in Our Lady's & St Michael's church in Workington is of national distinction, particularly so as it has not been messed around with and is very much still as it was when it was built in 1906.

"It is a feat of extraordinary mechanical engineering, using wind to create a vast range of sounds which can shake you to the marrow and lift you to the heights.

"Music is such an incredible gift and the organ has been used to accompany some of the great events of Workington's history.

"It  continues to be enjoyed in weddings, funerals and all sorts of church services, school concerts and public recitals. Sadly the organ of late has been becoming increasingly asthmatic after 120 years of use and is in serious need of resuscitation.

"We hope that many people will come to its rescue and ensure many generations into the future will enjoy its glorious sound."

A 'Pedals, Pipes and Pizza' event will take place this Saturday, October 5 from 12pm at Our Lady & St Michael's Church at Banklands, Workington. There will be a chance to learn more about and experience the organ, plus have tea and coffee and a slice of pizza.
