A NEW convenience store in Carlisle is on schedule to open on this autumn as signage goes up.

Work is progressing on the Spar shop on English Street as it progresses towards its upcoming opening.

The shop sits in the location of the former Edinburgh Woollen Mill store which closed in 2020.

A spokesperson for James Hall & Co. Ltd, SPAR UK’s primary wholesaler and distributor for the north of England, said: "Work is progressing on the store, and we are on schedule for an autumn launch."

It was announced earlier this year that the Spar would be taking over the building with local building firm McKnight renovating the premises.

The proposed opening hours from the initial planning application were from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.

The SPAR store will be operated by M&L Richardson & Sons Ltd who already have a number of forecourts and SPAR stores in Cumbria and the North East of England.
