Carlisle Cathedral is set to shine brighter with new lighting.
The floodlighting scheme, funded by the UK Government as part of the Carlisle Town Deal, will be installed over the coming weeks.
Featuring the latest energy-efficient LED technology, the new system will spotlight the cathedral and Fratry as key landmarks.
The current lighting system has reached the end of its serviceable life, prompting Cumberland Council to seize the opportunity for a substantial upgrade.
A professional archaeologist will be present on site during all ground work.
The new system will also enable creative and dynamic lighting, with changing colours and scenes.
This project aims to draw more people to the city centre, increase dwell time, and encourage visits to bars and restaurants.
Edith McColgan, chief operating officer of Carlisle Cathedral, said: "We are delighted that work on the floodlighting project is beginning at Carlisle Cathedral and greatly look forward to this improvement in the Cathedral precinct.
"Our thanks go to Cumberland Council for investing in this exciting development, which enables us to upgrade our existing external lighting to a more modern and energy efficient LED lighting system.
"We look forward to illuminating our historic city centre landmark once the work is complete."
The 'Lighting Up Carlisle' project is part of a larger initiative that has already successfully illuminated the Citadel, Station, Court Square, and Crown and Mitre Hotel.
New lighting schemes are also planned for other landmark locations in the city.
The project aims to enhance the city centre's appeal as a destination in its own right, with a vibrant evening economy and attractions outside of the peak tourist season.
Well-lit historic buildings are not only a tourist attraction, but they also instil a sense of pride in residents about their history.
The Carlisle Town Deal Board, formed in January 2020, comprises representatives from key public and private sector organisations in the city.
It was set up to steer Carlisle's vision and objectives for the Town Deal.
Carlisle projects, including the cathedral lighting scheme, are set to benefit from £19.7 million in funding after their final business plans were approved by the Government.
They form part of the city's Town Deal Investment Plan.
Other schemes benefitting from Town Deal funding include the ongoing Carlisle Southern Gateway improvements on English Street and Tullie’s improvement works.
