Workington Reds got their FA Trophy campaign up and running with an impressive fightback against Morpeth Town.

Mark Fell's side swept into the first round proper with a 3-1 third qualifying round win at Borough Park.

Reds trailed at the break through an early Jack Foalle strike.

But Workington responded in style in the second half, Steven Rigg equalising on the hour mark after Dav Symington's shot came back off the post.

Substitute Jamie Allen then put Reds in front in the 85th minute after good work from Tom Stephenson.

And Rigg then doubled his tally two minutes later to seal victory in front of a 592 crowd at Borough Park.

Manager Fell later spoke of his delight at Reds win saying, in a club interview: "I actually thought we played ok [in the first half] but just gave away a bit on the counter.

"We spoke at half-time about having more quality with the ball, and having that belief, [because] we'd created five or six really good chances.

"It was also about having that ice-cold composure around the box. We scored enough goals to get the job done and the substitutes that came on all changed the game.

"Tom Stephenson was electric down the left, didn't give them a minute and was involved in two of the goals."

Fell also praised two-goal Rigg. "If we had player of the season getting into October it would be him. He's had such a strong start.

"But everybody contributed today."

Workington's victory over their fellow Northern Premier League Premier Division side also earned them £2,450 in prize money as well as a place in Monday's first round draw.

Next up for the Reds is a return to league action next weekend when Fell's side take on Ilkeston Town at Borough Park.
