A Cumbrian playwright’s new production of a darkly comic anthology will kick off later this month.

Hannah Sowerby, from Appleby and formerly of the Penrith Players theatre company, wrote the anthology play Doomgate with Jamie McLeish and Lynne Patrick.

Presented by Laurels Theatre and Carpet Time Productions, the show takes place in the small and fictional Northumbrian town of Mould-on-the-Wall, where things are never quite what they seem.

The show was programmed after the writers reached the final one per cent of entries for the Richard Jenkinson Commission, an award run by Laurels Theatre that aims to find exciting shows to develop.

Carpet Time Productions is a new theatre company consisting of Hannah Sowerby, Jamie McLeish and Lynne Patrick.

The trio met while writing and performing on BBC Radio Newcastle’s comedy show Grin Up North.

The trio said they are all working class and proud to present down-to-earth, but exciting work, and hope this is the first of many productions they create together and already have lots more ideas in the bank.

Doomgate, which runs at Laurels Theatre in Whitley Bay from October 29 - November 2, will offer audiences a chance to enjoy a dark comedy play that’s sure to delight fans of shows such as The League of Gentlemen and Nighty Night.

Ms Sowerby said: “It’s amazing getting the chance to make work that we’d really want to see ourselves as theatregoers.

“Dark comedy is very rare on stage and even rarer in the Northeast.

“Usually, you have to go to London or the Edinburgh Fringe to watch a show like this.

“We are super excited to bring this kind of show to our corner of the UK.”
