A PETROL station and shop in Penrith could be set for a new, improved offering after an application was lodged with council planners.

Morrisons petrol station on Brunswick Road, owned by Motor Fuel Group (MFG), is the subject of the plan, which would see an extension to the station’s shop with a food kiosk, creation of an electric vehicle charging zone, and three jet wash bays with associated works.

The extension to the Morrisons retail building would total 72 square metres.

The proposed works would replace much of the existing car park, which currently consists of 18 parking spaces.

The proposal, if successful, would leave six parking spaces at the site.

MFG, which owns over 900 petrol stations across the UK, submitted a cover letter in support of its application, emphasising the need for more vehicle charging facilities across the country in line with government policy.

It says: "MFG are looking to roll-out an extensive supply of EV charging facilities at existing Morrisons sites across the UK to diversify their existing offer, with the aspiration to make it as easy to charge your vehicle as re-fuelling with petrol or diesel."

In regard to the kiosk extension, it says: "Any small uplift in turnover the extension will bring will not be spending that would otherwise be spent in the town centre."

The proposal is being considered by Westmorland and Furness Council.
