A YOUNGSTER won a competition to design a toadstool which went on display at Egremont Crab Fair.
Les Coan of Egremont Crab Fair committee tasked children with decorating a wooden toadstool to be exhibited at the popular event, held last month.
Bo Musson, a pupil at Beckermet School, was named as the winner after the toadstools were judged by the Crab Fair Queen, who was impressed by both the designs and the decoration of the entries.
Mrs Coan came up with the idea after seeing the toadstools at the Distington Vintage Rally, earlier this year.
After contacting the Dearham Woodturners Group, the toadstools were purchased and handed out to schools around the Egremont area.
Four schools took part in the competition and the decorated entries were collected and displayed in the children’s tent on the Crab Fair field, as part of the Saturday events.
At least one child found her own toadstool and was delighted – even though that one was not the eventual winner!
Mrs Coan held a similar competition last year when pupils designed a greetings card themed on the centuries-old event.
Egremont Crab Fair was established in 1267, which makes it one of the oldest fairs in the world.
It combines ancient and traditional events with modern attractions in a unique way, attracting visitors from all over the world.
