A QUESTION will be asked by a member of the public next week regarding a safe pedestrian crossing in Carlisle at a meeting next week.

Members of Cumberland Council's highways and transport strategic board are due to meet at Allerdale House in Workington on Tuesday (October 24).

The question relates to the proposed installation of crossing facilities at the traffic signals on the Windsor Way Junction with Kingstown Road and it will be asked during the time set aside for public participation.

Members are also set to discuss the proposed crossing when they consider a council report which informs the board of the initial findings from a preliminary design and feasibility study to provide two sets of pedestrian crossing facilities at the junction.

It is recommended that the proposed addition of the crossing facilities at the junction is progressed and implemented subject to the outcome of further consultation and no issues being raised at the detailed design stage.

According to the report there was public participation at Carlisle Local Committee in July 2022 and discussion at a subsequent meeting in January 2023.

It was subsequently agreed that the feasibility and costings of providing a signalised pedestrian crossing would be investigated, in order that the new Cumberland authority could take it up after the onset of Local Government Reform (LGR) from April 1, 2023.

The report adds: "Informal consultation was undertaken with affected residents and other interested parties.

"This consultation met with objections including from the local member and an opposing petition was presented at the April 2024 meeting of the Cumberland Highways and Transport Strategic Board.

"The board’s decision was that the proposal was deferred to a future board and that further investigations be undertaken, including the feasibility of including a pedestrian phase on the Windsor Way junction. "

Thursday's public meeting is due to begin at 2pm.
