A Carlisle woman celebrating her 103rd birthday has received more than 300 birthday cards from the local community.

Local school children and residents have been sending in their cards over the past week to help Irene Sanderson celebrate her special day.

Born in Linstock, Carlisle in 1921, Irene Sanderson has lived an extraordinary life, deeply rooted in her local community, and remains a beloved figure in the city.

Many local residents still remember her as a young girl behind the counter, serving the community with a ‘friendly’ smile.

Irene married her husband, Gordon, in 1945, and they enjoyed a happy life together in Carlisle.

While Irene and Gordon had no children, she remained close to her older brother Reginald and younger sister Gwendoline, who have both sadly passed away.

Known for her vibrant spirit and active lifestyle, Irene enjoys gardening, cooking, and has a lifelong love for dancing.

Music and dance continue to play a key role in her life, as she enjoys the rhythm of her favourite tunes.

Her determination and energy are ‘legendary’ according to Eden Manor Care Home.

Aged 97, Irene famously climbed onto the roof of her house to clean the windows herself after she felt the window cleaner hadn’t done the job properly.

Since May 2023, Irene has been a cherished resident at Eden Manor Care Home, where she continues to ‘inspire’ both staff and fellow residents with her ‘zest’ for life.

“Irene is a remarkable woman,” said Eden Manor manager, Kate Lewis.

“The community have just come together amazingly in making cards for this remarkable woman.

“We had a little boy came in yesterday with his mum and he'd made her a card and it had an angel on and it’s those lovely things that are going to make her day just extra special.”

Irene’s birthday was celebrated by both staff and residents at Eden Manor with food and a special dance floor.
