'Essential' resurfacing works have begun on the A6071 in Brampton and are scheduled to last until Friday, October 25.
The work will take place daily from 7.00am to 6.00pm, weather permitting, which may result in last-minute changes.
During this time, the A6071 is closed from The Sands (in Brampton), on the Newcastle Road, to the A69 junction for the entire duration.
A clearly marked diversion route is in place, and all road users are advised to follow the signage and plan their journeys accordingly.
The resurfacing works have been welcomed by local residents who have compared the road to the ‘surface of the moon’ for the number of potholes and craters on it.
Local residents have recently launched petitions and campaigns to get Cumberland Council to undertake this ‘essential’ work.
To minimise disruption for local residents and businesses, traffic marshals are on site to safely escort people through the works when possible, but the council have said that “short delays” may occur depending on ongoing site activities.
Access for emergency services will be maintained throughout the works, as well as waste collections.
The 685-bus service is not serving Brampton Sands. Instead, the service is being diverted via Carlisle Road in both directions, before rejoining the A69 following stops at Shoulder of Mutton/Cranstons.

Regular routing is expected to resume with the first service on Monday, October 28.
Passengers are advised that delays may occur due to the diversion and potential increases in traffic and should contact Stagecoach with any queries.
A spokesperson for Cumberland Council said: "Cumberland Council and Connect Roads would like to thank the community for their patience and support as these important improvements are made to the road network and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
