A child mountain biker was taken to hospital with injuries to his hip and pelvis after jumping and landing awkwardly on a stump in a Cumbrian woodland.
It happened on Saturday, October 19, at Coombs Wood, Armathwaite.
The Northwest Ambulance Service (NWAS) contacted Penrith Mountain Rescue Team (PMRT) at 1.10pm.
The 13-year-old was part of a party of mountain bikers, and as PMRT were on their way a request was lodged with the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAAS) for their attendance given the ‘potentially very serious nature of the injuries’, a PMRT spokesperson said.
They said that GNAAS were able to get to the casualty site quickly, followed shortly after by PMRT members and NWAS paramedics.
The spokesperson added: “The casualty, having been given strong pain relief by the GNAAS doctor, was immobilised in a full body vacuum mattress and stretchered through the woods to an ambulance for onward travel to hospital.
“We wish him a speedy recovery.”
The callout involved 12 PMRT members and lasted three hours.
