A TOWN’S war memorial is being given a spruce-up ahead of Remembrance Sunday.
The cenotaph at Castle Park in Whitehaven is being given a £3,673 facelift, in a joint venture by Whitehaven Town Council and Cumberland Council.
The works will include steam cleaning, repointing, and restoring the nose.
The restoration was due to take place last week but was not able to go ahead due to bad weather.
It is now hoped the works will be completed in time for Remembrance Sunday when the town will gather at the cenotaph to remember the war dead.
Chris Hayes, deputy mayor of Whitehaven, who will be attending the event on behalf of Whitehaven Town Council, said: “We got together with Cumberland Council to get it renovated. Whitehaven Town Council have put in half the cost of the renovation.
“It was a unanimous vote by the council to support it.
“This was phase one. Next year we will do a bigger standing area around the cenotaph.
“I think it will be a big event this year.”
The Remembrance Sunday service will take place at the cenotaph on Sunday, November 10 at 11am.
