THIS week we wanted to take a look at our love of cats.

It is Cat Day this month which focuses on the enjoyment cat lovers get from their treasured pets.

Animal lovers are encouraged to consider adopting cats from shelters and post pictures of their beloved pets on the internet.

In the UK the focus is on black cats, as it was found that black and white cats took on average a week longer to home than cats of different colours.

This has been attributed to the perceived connection of black cats with bad luck and the supernatural. It is also the case that the cats do not photograph well on social media.

The day was established on back in 2011 to be celebrated on October 27, by the animal welfare charity Cat Protection.

Whilst in the US, the day is celebrated on October 29, with the focus being on raising public awareness of cat adoption.

The National Cat Day website states that the holiday was first celebrated in 2005 'to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their life for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.'

National Black Cat Day was established to combat the superstitions and misconceptions that have surrounded black cats for centuries. It emphasizes the importance of celebrating and supporting these often overlooked and misunderstood feline companions.

This day plays a vital role in advocating for the welfare and adoption of black cats, ensuring they find loving homes and receive the care they deserve.

These photos show how Cumbrians have shared their love of cats over the years. We hope that they bring back some fond memories for some of you.
