AMBITIOUS plans to transform two key areas in Whitehaven town centre have been revealed.
Cumberland Council is has announced the opening of an invitation to tender for contractors to deliver the Whitehaven Public Realm Scheme, focusing on improvements to Green Market and Duke Street.
The project aims to revitalise key areas of Whitehaven, including the replacement, cleaning, and repair of paving at Green Market and the Duke Street end of King Street.
Plans also include the installation of new planting, seating, and litter bins, along with historical interpretation boards that will highlight the rich heritage of the Green Market and Market Hall.
The design for these improvements has been completed by Align Property Partners.
The council says the initiative will enhance the town’s public realm and also boost local footfall and preserve the cultural significance of the area for years to come.
A contractor will be appointed through the tender process, with construction set to begin in January and completion expected by spring 2025.
The £450,000 project is funded through contributions from Sellafield, the council, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
