A Carlisle man is aiming to conquer the height of Lord of the Rings' Mount Doom in order to raise money for charity.
Andy Weafer will begin his climbing challenge next month at Eden Rock Bouldering Gym, who have devised 300 climbing routes for Andy, which will see him complete roughly 150 ft each day in November.
By November 30, he aims to have climbed a total of 4500 ft, which is the same height as the fictional Mount Doom.
Andy is fundraising for Andy's Man Club, an organisation which is continuing to offer vital support to men struggling with mental health issues in the region.
Andy said: "I have a history of doing various charity events and challenges. I’ve had a little break from doing these in recent years and decided it’s time to do a hobby I’ve taken up recently and turn it into a fund raising challenge for a charity I hold dear to."
Last year, Andy ran the distance from The Shire to Mordor to raise money for Diabetes UK, as the hobbits do in the Lord of the Rings series, but he felt his journey through Tolkien's lands wasn't quite complete.
He added: "I’ve always felt that journey didn’t exactly come to a conclusion because I didn’t include the mountain they climb at the end of Lord Of The Rings. So, it’ll be great to bring these two challenges together as one whole challenge for two great causes."
Andy only recently fell in love with climbing, thanks to becoming a member at Eden Rock, but he is still confident ahead of his challenge.
He concluded: "I’ve had an interest in climbing for a few years but never had a real chance to embrace it until we moved from Newcastle to Carlisle, where we found a house 10 minutes away from Eden Rock Bouldering gym. Not long after settling in, I became a member and I’ve been going at least once a week. This is the first climbing challenge I’ve set for myself, I'm feeling very confident and already thinking of others to possibly do in the new year."
He has raised over £250 for the charity via his JustGiving page, which you can donate to here.
