A new art exhibition has opened in Carlisle, aiming to present a critical examination of modern society.
Titled 'In the Dark Times', the exhibition, open at the Vallum Gallery at the University of Cumbria's Brampton Road campus, was created by artists Martin Fowler and Billy McCall.
Running until November 1, it addresses topics such as the oil industry, weapons manufacturing, the army and 'neoliberal freeports'.
The exhibition, which combines painting, photography and video, also explores the challenges facing contemporary political and civil society, questioning the concept of progress within liberal humanism, reflecting a decade of collaborative work, according to a guide of the exhibition.
Martin Fowler is the head of fine art at the University of Cumbria, a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, Winchester School of Art and Kunstakademie Dusseldorf and has previously worked as a lecturer in art within the Scottish Prison Service.
Mr Fowler completed a PhD in 2022, focusing on dissident art practices and their relationship with capitalism.
Billy McCall, a Scottish artist based in Newcastle, studied at Glasgow School of Art and has exhibited his work in the UK, Europe, Japan, and Australia.
The exhibition is open to all, offering a space for visitors to engage with the themes presented through the work.
