A referendum on the Penrith Neighbourhood Development Plan is set for November 28.

The plan, introduced as part of the 2011 Localism Act, gives local communities a formal say in how their areas are developed.

Once approved, it will be used to guide decisions on planning applications and help shape the future of Penrith.

In March 2022, an independent examination of the plan recommended it move forward to a referendum, provided certain modifications were made.

The town council accepted all but two of these changes, which were subject to public consultation earlier this year.

Having met the necessary legal requirements, Westmorland and Furness Council has now confirmed the plan is ready for a vote.

Residents are urged to participate in the referendum, as only a simple majority in favour will lead to the plan's adoption.

This will mean that the council will factor the development plan into its decision-making processes regarding planning applications.

Conversely, if the majority votes against the plan, it will not be adopted.

Those wishing to have their say in the referendum must be on the register of electors by November 12.

Voters have until 5pm on Wednesday, November 13, to apply for a postal vote or change their existing postal vote details.

Applications for a Voter Authority Certificate or Anonymous Elector Document must be in by 5pm on Wednesday, November 20.

The same deadline applies to applications for a proxy vote.

However, if you are applying for a proxy vote due to a medical emergency, you have until November 28 to apply.

The council has made the Penrith Neighbourhood Development Plan and supporting documents available for public viewing.

These documents can be accessed on the Westmorland and Furness website.

Alternatively, they can be viewed at Penrith's Voreda House, Penrith Library, Kendal Town Hall, and Barrow Town Hall.

These resources provide insight into the neighbourhood development plan.

The primary objective of a Neighbourhood Development Plan is to give residents more control over the planning policies that affect their local areas.

By voting in favour of the Penrith plan, residents can take a significant step towards having a greater say in the future development of their town.

The plan is not just a document but a tool that empowers residents to shape their community.

So, whether you are a homeowner, a tenant, or a business owner in Penrith, remember that your vote will play a role in determining the future of your locality.

Make sure you are registered and ready to vote on November 28.
