Workington Reds have expressed their "profound sadness" at the death of their former chairman Dale Brotherton.

The Cumbrian businessman has passed away at the age of 54, it has been announced.

Mr Brotherton was Reds chairman from 2000 to 2006 having also been involved with the club for many more years, and remained a supporter of the club until his death.

His time with the Borough Park club included promotion to Conference North in the 2004/05 season.

Reds have paid a heartfelt tribute as they announced the sad news on Thursday evening.

In a club statement, Workington said: "It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of former Workington AFC chairman, Dale Brotherton.  He was 54.

"Dale had been associated with the club for over thirty years – a hands-on role until 2007 and as a regular supporter since.

"He became the youngest chairman in the club’s history, taking over the role in his early thirties, and spending six years in the post.  In addition, he also spent several years as club secretary.

"Dale attended numerous games this season, both home and away.

We send our condolences to his wife, Nicki, their three children and his extended circle of friends and associates."

Mr Brotherton was the owner of property company Lime House Estates, and was also involved in the running of Lime House School in Dalston, where he had been educated.

As well as his steadfast support of local sport and the Reds, Mr Brotherton was also known as a huge Dr Who fan.
