PLANS for a new safe pedestrian crossing in Carlisle will be progressed in more detail after councillors agreed the move this week.

Members of Cumberland Council's highways and transport strategic board met at Allerdale House on Thursday (October 24) to consider the proposed installation of crossing facilities at the traffic signals on the Windsor Way junction with Kingstown Road.

It was recommended that the proposed addition of the crossing facilities at traffic signals at the junction were "progressed and implemented, subject to the outcome of further consultation and no issues being raised at the detailed design" stage according to the report.

Councillor John Mallinson (Houghton and Irthington, Conservative) said it was a very busy road and crossing it was "difficult" for pedestrians. He moved the recommendation and rest of the board members agreed.

According to the report there was public participation at Carlisle Local Committee in July 2022 and discussion at a subsequent meeting in January 2023.

It was subsequently agreed that the feasibility and costings of providing a signalised pedestrian crossing would be investigated, in order that the new Cumberland authority could take it up after the onset of Local Government Reform (LGR) from April 1, 2023.

The report adds: "Informal consultation was undertaken with affected residents and other interested parties.

"This consultation met with objections including from the local member and an opposing petition was presented at the April 2024 meeting of the Cumberland Highways and Transport Strategic Board.

"The board’s decision was that the proposal was deferred to a future board and that further investigations be undertaken, including the feasibility of including a pedestrian phase on the Windsor Way junction. "
