A Carlisle charity has fundraised and purchased a cutting-edge, portable piece of technology which it says will ‘improve’ the lives of Cumbrians with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and associated disabilities.
Described as the world's most advanced communication device, Eyegaze uses a special tracking camera mounted below the Eyegaze screen to observe one of the users' eyes.
Sophisticated image processing software then analyses the cameras images 60 times per second and determines where the user is looking on the screen a bit like a mouse on an everyday computer.
Deborah Hields is the resource centre manager of the Cumbria Cerebral Palsy charity based in the city. She said she is ‘astounded’ by the response from users.
"This is the communication device for the future for all of our cerebral palsy users,” said Deborah
“It enables every disabled person to have a voice and promotes independence.
“All of our staff are now fully trained to use Eyegaze for communication strategies for all abilities."
Deborah went on to say: "Its portability is a major strength as it allows our community family advisors to take it to our clients in the Cumbrian community where they can easily access the internet without needing assistance thereby giving them the independence they aspire to have.
“For the first time I have seen a person 'speak' to their family which was truly moving and life changing"
The Eyegaze technology is a more up to date cutting edge piece of technology that Professor Stephen Hawking used to generate his instantly recognizable computerised voice and Cumbria Cerebral Palsy say they are the only charity in the region that has fundraised the necessary £7,000 needed to buy this piece of technology which is now installed at Lister House in Carlisle.
