Buildings across Cumberland will glow blue this week in recognition of Care Experienced Week.

The event, from October 28 to November 3, raises awareness of the challenges faced by young people leaving the care system.

The blue lighting aims to spotlight the ongoing support needed for these individuals, who often struggle with securing housing, education, and employment after care.

Cumberland Council hope the illuminated buildings will 'encourage conversations' on community assistance.

Councillor Emma Williamson, deputy leader and executive member for children, family wellbeing, and housing, said: "We want to make Cumberland a place where care experienced young people are embraced by their community and supported in overcoming the challenges they face.

"Whether it’s providing safe housing, access to education, mental health support, or mentorship, we must work together to create a network of support and opportunity."

Councillor Williamson also encouraged more organisations to assist in creating opportunities for these young people.

She said: "We would love for more organisations to open to these young people and help to provide the opportunities they need.

"I have really high aspirations for our care experienced young people and by creating an inclusive community we can help every young person reach their full potential."

Councillor Williamson concluded by saying: "I also want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements of all our young people, Care Experienced Week is an opportunity to reflect and celebrate them."
