MORE than 5,000 handmade poppies are now on display in Carlisle to mark Remembrance Day 2024.
The knitted and crocheted poppies have been months in the making and are on show in The Lanes Shopping Centre, on the Market Cross, and the Old Town Hall and were installed starting on Friday, October 25
Carlisle Matters’ Yarn Bombers and The Lanes Shopping Centre joined forces with the local community, to create the 'extraordinary' display to mark Remembrance Day, which was first started in May and will be on display in the city centre until Monday, November 11.
Carlisle Matters’ spokesperson, Helen Fisher, speaking after the display's installation was complete, said: "This is very exciting, and we are looking forward to more installations to develop a creative backdrop for the city.
"This wouldn’t be happening without the support of The Lanes Carlisle and hundreds of people all around Carlisle. We can’t thank you enough."
Susan Young, Centre Manager of The Lanes Shopping Centre added: "The Lanes Shopping Centre is pleased to support the Poppy installation and hope that it will prompt people to take a moment and reflect on the brave men and women who have given their all in war and conflict."
Following the huge success of their Show & Tell Yarn Bombing in Bitts Park, in May of this year, Charlotte White went on to form the Carlisle Matters’ Yarn Bombers Group.
Charlotte said: "It’s been a wonderful way to bring the community together to create something fabulous for the City of Carlisle.

The commemoration has also been supported by Cumberland Council.
Cllr Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said: "I would like to pass on my thanks to everyone who took part and supported this project.
"It was a great way to engage the community in a creative and collaborative way. It is a fitting tribute for Remembrance."
