A £27m redevelopment plan for Carlisle's Court Square has been submitted.

The application was submitted by Cumberland Council in partnership with Network Rail and Avanti West Coast as part of the 'ambitious' Carlisle Station Gateway project.

The major transformation will be funded through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.

The aim is to revitalise Carlisle's historic train station, improve the first impressions for visitors, and strengthen connectivity across the Borderlands region.

The proposed 'Northern Gateway' will prioritise Court Square for pedestrians, limiting vehicle access to emergency services, maintenance, waste collection, and deliveries.

The project plans include the refurbishment of public spaces with landscaping, seating, and the reintroduction of the historic Lawson Fountain to its original site.

There will also be upgraded pedestrian crossings to better link the city centre, Court Brow, and Botchergate, providing easy access to key areas and taxi services.

Story Contracting Limited, a Carlisle-based company, will carry out the work and has previously delivered numerous public realm schemes for the council.

The company is working with businesses in the area to maximise the investment and is developing plans to support employment and community initiatives.

The Carlisle Station project will also introduce a new 'Southern Gateway' known as 'George Square', featuring a new public car park and square to the station's south.

This development will redirect vehicle traffic from the north to the south side of the station, reducing congestion and improving traffic flow in the station area.

A planning application for this section of the project is expected to be submitted this month.

The Carlisle Station Gateway Project aims to transform Carlisle into a 'vibrant regional hub', supporting economic growth while celebrating the station's historical significance.

Construction is anticipated to start in 2025 and is expected to be completed by 2026/27.

The project aims to improve accessibility and connectivity while creating a welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
