Cumberland Council has joined forces with Cumbria Tourism to launch a new campaign to promote accessibility in the region.
Adventure for Everyone will run concurrently with the ongoing food and drink campaign.
Funded by the UK government through the Shared Prosperity Funding, Adventure for Everyone will raise awareness of existing accessible offerings in the area while also supporting businesses in their journey to becoming more accessible for all, whether that be via improved signage, clear and concise access statements or developing the necessary products and offerings.
The project has the ambition to highlight the wide breadth of accessible accommodation, attractions, adventure, entertainment and hospitality that is available across Carlisle, the western Lake District and coast.
Cumberland Council places heath and wellbeing at the heart of everything they do and the project is about highlighting that adventures are for everyone - creating shared experiences via entry level led activities.
Cllr Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s executive member for vibrant and healthy places, said: “The key is to raise awareness of the destination as one that is welcoming for everyone, no matter their personal circumstances. There is so much for people to see and do in Carlisle, the western Lake District and coast that it would be inconceivable for the area not to be available to everyone to enjoy.
“We have appointed the team at Cumbria Tourism to deliver the project and they will be working closely with businesses to ensure that their access information is up to date. Furthermore, we will be actively promoting what is already available for those visiting in the immediate future.
“The council has also created a new Changing Place at Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway which offers users the freedom to explore new places, experiences, be adventurous and have a great day out. The inclusive cycle hub offers a range of adapted bikes and the opportunity to try cycling on a safe, dedicated circuit and with support.”
Adventure for Everyone will focus not only on visible disabilities but also those with neurological impairments and conditions that may not be immediately obvious.
In addition to working with local businesses, Cumbria Tourism has been tasked with working with media and influencers to bring them to the area to review what is currently available.
Alongside the Adventure for Everyone campaign, both Cumberland Council and Cumbria Tourism are also working on a second phase of their successful food and drink programme. This will shine a light on the area’s producers and businesses that support the use of local produce. Again, there will be a combination of business support, marketing and PR activity to highlight and celebrate the diverse range of high-quality food and drink available in Cumberland.
