We're highlighting the shortlisted curry houses in our competition in the News & Star. Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues.

The Stanwix Tandoori has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of the ten finalists in its 'Best Curry House 2024' award.

The restaurant, which is located on Scotland Road is owned by current director Muhib Ali, however, has been family-owned in Carlisle since 1981.

The finalists have been vying for votes from the public for nearly a week now - and you can submit yours by picking up a copy of the News & Star before Saturday, November 9.

After being informed that The Stanwix Tandoori had been chosen by News & Star readers to feature in the final ten of the 'Best Curry House 2024' award, Muhib said: "We have never entered any awards, so this one, to be acknowledged by the people who matter most — our loyal customers and the local community — is both humbling and incredibly rewarding.

"We have always had a fantastic local following, being part of the community since 1981.

"This recognition is a testament to the strong relationships we've built with our customers over the years and the shared passion we have for delivering exceptional food, memorable moments, and outstanding service.

"We have been through a lot over the years – most notably the fire which destroyed the restaurant in 2021. The support we have received is unbelievable.

"We’re incredibly grateful to be part of such a vibrant community and to be acknowledged by those who matter most — our guests."

Aside from the restaurant's quality food, for Muhib, The Stanwix Tandoori has become a local favourite thanks to its focus on community and creating a family atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.

He said: "I have often said that we are more of a community centre than a restaurant. We have served generations of families.

"We have guests who came on our opening night in 1981, still coming with their children and grandchildren.

"This is a testament to the care we take to look after our guests.

"Indian cuisine is all about bringing people together — it’s meant to be shared with loved ones, family, and friends.

"I love seeing customers enjoy our food in the same way.

"Whether they’re celebrating a birthday, having a family dinner, or enjoying a casual meal with friends, the sense of community that we foster in the restaurant is very special."
