A Carlisle law firm has been awarded a Family Legal Aid contract.

Wragg Mark-Bell Solicitors, based on Castle Street, will now be able to represent clients who are struggling to pay for legal representation on 'critical family matters' such as divorce, custody, and domestic abuse.

Keith White, private client and family solicitor at Wragg Mark-Bell, said: "This contract will ensure justice is accessible to our clients regardless of financial capability and that they get the support they need when it matters most.

"Legal Aid protects the rights of low-income individuals, provides access to justice by providing legal representation in the court system, and safeguards legal rights and helps individuals to navigate legal processes."

Wragg Mark-Bell’s family law team provides guidance in an area of law that is complex and 'often emotionally charged', dealing with matters that can cause 'immense stress and turmoil.'

In divorce and separation proceedings – including same-sex marriages and civil partnership dissolutions – the aim is to promote 'amicable resolutions' to minimise conflict and find a path forward.

The team offers legal support to protect victims of domestic violence and their loved ones, guiding them through the necessary legal steps to ensure their safety.

In the wake of changes to child custody laws, the firm provides guidance on Childcare Arrangement Orders, which have replaced Child Contact, Child Custody Orders, and Residence Orders.

The focus is on the 'best interests of the children while respecting the rights of parents and guardians.'

Nick Kennon, managing director of Wragg Mark-Bell, said: "We’re delighted to be awarded the Family Legal Aid contract.

"As a practice, it’s important to us that people across the community can access our services when they really need them.

"This award will enable many more clients to benefit from our expertise in this sensitive and complex area of law."
