A golf club is delighted to put Silloth 'on the map' after being recognised as one of the best courses in the country.
Silloth on Solway Golf Club has been named a finalist in the England: Course of the Year category at the prestigious Golf Course Awards.
The award is 'given to the very best in terms of design, condition, and aesthetics,' as well as innovation and accessibility.
Alan Oliver, the club secretary, said: “It’s the first time we’ve been nominated for something like this.
"We’re lucky to be included in a lot of top 100 rankings, but this is a huge thing for the golf club.
“We’re always trying to raise awareness of the club and let people know about Silloth—who we are and where we are," he said.
Highlighting Cumbria's great offering when it comes to links, Alan said: "Cumbria as a whole gets overlooked when it comes to golfing destinations, but there are some great courses here. It’s great that other courses are starting to get that recognition as well.
“These rankings bring people into the area - we're seeing members join both locally and also from outside of the county.
"Anything that helps us shout from the rooftops about how good the course is and get people to come and visit is a positive thing," he said.
The scenic course, which was first laid out in 1892 and is described as 'superb value for money', will compete against five other courses, including Woking’s Worplesdon Golf Club and The Grove in Hertfordshire, which Tiger Woods won the World Golf Championship event at in 2006.

The award winner will be announced at a national ceremony in London on December 5 in which the club's representatives will attend.
“Whether we win or not, in one sense it doesn’t matter because we’ve gotten this far and it’s massive for the club," Alan said.
Silloth on Solway Golf Club was also named among the top 20 English courses in a 2023 survey by Today’s Golfer magazine.
One survey panelist described the course as "rugged, raw, and really good" and "an epic links that is every inch a World Top 100 course."
