A mountain rescue team in the Lake District said it had a ‘surprisingly busy day for this time of year’ with three callouts, involving searches and helping an injured walker.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) described the three callouts for which they were deployed yesterday (November 6), starting with one at Cross Fell at 9.10am.

A spokesperson from Keswick MRT said: “First off, the Keswick team were asked to assist on the second day of a search for a missing walker in the Pennines area who had spent the night out.

“Shortly before the team arrived at Garrigil, near Alston, the man was located to the team were stood down.”

This callout involved five Keswick MRT members, with the help of other mountain rescue teams, and took three and a half hours.

The second callout, at Steel Fell at 2.33pm, involved a lone walker who lost her way in thick cloud.

The Keswick MRT spokesperson explained: “Based on the woman’s description of her actions and the location of her car, possible routes were followed by team members, initially in dense mist then in the dark.

“When a new phone find location was received which put her back on the main ridge, it happened to be conveniently close to one of the searchers.

“The uninjured woman was then walked off the hill and returned to her car at Steel End.”

This callout involved eight Keswick MRT members, five Langdale-Ambleside MRT members, and took three hours and 52 minutes.

The third and final callout for that day started at 4.49pm.

The Keswick MRT spokesperson said: “A passerby alerted the team to a boulderer who had taken an awkward fall from the Bowderstone whilst climbing - he had landed badly and painfully injured his knee.

“With all the main rescue vehicles and team members either involved in the Steel Fell rescue or doing 4x4 training a small team was cobbled together who made their way to the Bowderstone in the boat bus and their own vehicles.

“The man was assessed and given pain relief before splinting his leg for a stretcher carry to the car park where his friend was able to put him in the back of his car for a trip to hospital.”

This callout involved 11 Keswick MRT members and took one hour and 31 minutes.
