Carlisle's war memorial has been successfully moved to a more prominent location in the city centre ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

This relocation is part of Cumberland Council's broader £4 million project, funded by the Future High Streets Fund, aimed at transforming the Greenmarket and Market Square area which includes a multifunctional events space.

The work on the Greenmarket and Market Square, which began in August, is expected to be completed by spring 2025.

Eric Wright Civil Engineering has been chosen as the contractor for the project.

The relocation of the memorial from outside the Crown and Mitre to its new 'focal point' has previously received the backing of the Royal British Legion.

Speaking previously to the News and Star, Margaret Wadsworth, secretary of the British Legion for Carlisle and Stanwix, said: "We think it’s a good idea to move it into a central position.

"It hasn’t been there forever, only in the last 40 years or so – there never was a war memorial in the centre of the town before that.

"To have it in the centre as more of a focal point for people is a good idea. It's kind of shut away in the corner in its current location, now it’ll attract more attention, and hopefully good attention," she said.

The Royal British Legion has organised a series of events for the upcoming commemoration period, including a Festival of Remembrance at St Cuthbert’s Church in Carlisle on November 8.

Tickets for the festival are free and can be obtained from the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre.

The event will start at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm.

On Sunday November 10, a Remembrance parade, service, and wreath Laying will take place at the war memorial in its new location.

Wreath layers will meet at the Crown & Mitre from 9.30am, with veterans gathering at the Cathedral entrance road by the antiques store from 10.15am.

Veterans and families are invited to the ex-servicemen's club on Albert Street/Victoria Place afterwards for refreshments.
