PLANS have been put forward to change the use of a former university building into a house in Carlisle.

The plans to turn the Grade II Stanwix House into a four-bedroom (plus) home have been put forward to Cumberland Council by H G Associates on behalf of Equorium Property Company Ltd.

The various changes outside the property include the "re-slating of the roof, rebuilding of chimneys, and erection of a summerhouse and garage/potting shed".

Plans also include the "demolition of existing detached garage and outbuilding".

The application highlights the building's state of disrepair due to a lack of use since 2015, leading to damage caused by water ingress, damp, and mould.

The design and access statement reads: "The proposal represents part of a package of significant investment by the applicant into a property that has not been in use for nearly a decade, has fallen into disrepair and, if this continues, will be at risk.

"The proposal also relates to a building that has undergone significant change since its origins that is not considered, as a result, to be so important and sensitive that alterations to accommodate a viable use would lead to an unacceptable loss of significance.

"The proposed changes are reflective of its new use that is considered to be the optimum viable use of the property. This represents a significant heritage benefit because, in general terms, viable use ties in with effective stewardship, and the safeguarding of significance.

"The proposal will support the local economy directly and indirectly through the construction and use phases," it states.

The proposal outlines a separate intention to refurbish Stanwix Cottage, adjacent to Stanwix house.
