A TOWN’S war memorial has been given a makeover – just in time for Remembrance Sunday.
The Cenotaph in Castle Park, Whitehaven, has been given a £3,673 facelift, thanks to funding from Whitehaven Town Council and Cumberland Council.
The works, which took two days to complete, have included steam cleaning, repointing, and restoring the nose of the sculpture.
Chris Hayes, mayor of Whitehaven, who will represent the town council at the Remembrance Sunday service this weekend, said: “It’s looking absolutely great. The guys have done a really good job of it.
“He’s repaired her nose and noticed her cheek was damaged so repaired that as well. It looks really great.”
The Remembrance Sunday service will take place at the cenotaph on Sunday, November 10 at 11am.
The Remembrance Sunday parade will take place on Sunday, November 10. The procession will set off from The Copeland Centre, Catherine Street, Whitehaven at 10:40am and will proceed to the War Memorial in Castle Park, where there will be a short service and wreath laying ceremony.
The procession will then continue onto the United Reformed Church for a service of remembrance.
A road closure will be in place on Lowther Street from the traffic lights at Morrisons to the traffic lights at the Civic Hall from 10:30am to 11:30am and The Market Place from 11:15am to 11:45am.
