An innovative new programme, launched earlier this year by Enterprising Cumbria (formerly the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership) and developed by young people on the Futures Forum, has been inspiring the county’s next generation of leaders.
Aimed at 18 to 35-year-olds, ‘Today’s Talent, Tomorrow’s Leaders’ has been designed to support young people to develop the skills that they need to lead both now and in the future. It comes off the back of a report that shows that the two things that would most improve Cumbria’s performance are leadership and management skills, and innovation.
Alex Mackintosh, content executive at Cumbria Tourism, has been taking part in the programme at the North Lakes Hotel & Spa in Penrith which has featured a combination of expert talks, workshops, and networking sessions throughout 2024.
“It’s been a fantastic experience so far,” she said. “Hearing from industry leading figures on what has helped them become the leaders they are today has been inspiring and informative in equal measure. Facilitated by Oliver Johnston, sessions have been well organised and designed to challenge participants in the ways we think about leadership.
“Day one focused on what it means to become a leader through a combination of talks and interactive workshops. A keynote speech from Jon Turner - MD of Electrification & Automation at Siemens - offered insight into key attitudes and skills for the future, while a session on mental toughness encouraged us to consider our own levels of resilience and positivity.
“Personal leadership style was at the centre of the second day and included a keynote address from Louise Firby, head of Group Business Services at Sellafield.
“Leadership coach Kevin Light led the third day, which featured a keynote address from Westmorland and Furness Council leader Councillor Jonathan Brook and focused on the importance of clear standards, communication, and dealing with conflict.
“With the wide variety of topics covered, and perspectives offered, there’s been plenty of food for thought. I’m looking forward to the final day of the course later this month."
The Futures Forum ensures that the views of young people in Cumbria are represented at a strategic level when it comes to economic development, and the value Cumbria has to offer young leaders is something they are keen to highlight through the course.
“I purposefully chose to live in Cumbria over London, as it punches well above its weight,” said Futures Forum member, and brand & marketing director at Hargreaves Enterprises, Graham Hadaway. “There are lots of opportunities here for young leaders as well as stunning landscapes. That’s why these leadership events are so important, providing a community and core skills for modern leaders in these challenging times."
