The Carlisle branch of St John Ambulance will celebrate its centenary birthday with the launch of a new cadet unit at an open day.

The open day, held at the charity's base on Scalegate Road, will give visitors the chance to take a look behind-the-scenes at all of the hard work that goes into supporting local people.

There will be an opportunity to meet the team, watch several demonstrations, tour the headquarters, explore the ambulances, and see the bikes used by the Cycle Response Team.

As well as this, they will be launching their new cadet unit which will give young people in the city the chance to learn vital first aid skills, build their confidence, and engage in community service.

Jeremy Hodierne, St John’s local Network Lead, said: "We are thrilled to celebrate 100 years of service in Carlisle and to launch our new cadet unit.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain valuable skills and make a positive impact in their community.

"We’re a friendly and dedicated group and we would love to grow our support for the public in the local area by bringing more youth leaders and helpers and, of course, cadets into our team in Carlisle."

The cadet unit is open to 20 young people between the ages of 10 and 17 who will meet weekly to participate in a variety of activities such as first aid training, social action projects, and leadership courses.

St John Ambulance is also looking for people to join the unit as youth helpers and leaders who will create an inclusive environment for the cadets and support the delivery of activities.

The open day will take place on Tuesday, November 19 between 7pm and 8.30pm.

Anyone interested in joining as a cadet or volunteering as a youth helper is encouraged to go along to the open day on Thursday or visit www.sja.org.uk for more information.
