TRIBUTES have been paid to the 'one of a kind' Carlisle woman Irene Sanderson who sadly passed away days after her 103rd birthday.
Irene, who was born in Linstock, Carlisle, sadly passed away on Tuesday, October 22 after her 103rd birthday was celebrated at Eden Manor Care Home on Saturday, October 19.
Irene, who lived through the reign of five English monarchs, lived a life that was deeply rooted in the local community, with her spending her early years working in her family's business, Stansfield Butchers in Carlisle.
In her later years, Irene moved into Eden Manor Care Home where she was a 'cherished' member of the community.
To mark Irene's 103rd birthday, the care home on Lanrigg Road had put an appeal out to the public to try and get 103 birthday cards... and were delighted when she received over 300.
After her sad passing, Katie Lewis, manager of Eden Manor Care Home, paid her own tribute to Irene, whose 'legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew her.'
She said: "It is with heartfelt sadness that Eden Manor Care Home announces the passing of Irene Sanderson, who peacefully left us after celebrating an extraordinary life that spanned 103 years.
"Irene, born in Linstock, Carlisle in 1921, was a cherished member of the community whose legacy will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
"Irene was truly one of a kind. Her energy, resilience, and warmth left a mark on everyone she met. We were privileged to have her as part of our Eden Manor family, and her memory will continue to inspire us all.”
"Irene’s passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew her.
"Eden Manor Care Home, along with the wider community, extends its deepest condolences to Irene’s friends and loved ones."
