A road was closed after a crash, which resulted in a gas leak.

Copeland Police released a statement on Facebook at around 1.14pm that explained that the crash happened on Birks Road in Cleator Moor.

Northwest Ambulance Service (NWAS) and Cumbria Fire also attended.

Copeland Police added that the road was closed due to a gas leak being caused by the collision, and that the road was likely to remain closed for some time.

"At the moment there is no risk to members of public however are advised to stay clear of the area," they added.

A spokesperson from Cumbria police said the road reopened at 2pm and the police are no longer there.

They said they couldn't add any more details about the severity of the crash, whether anyone was injured, or the vehicles involved, however.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said it was a single vehicle crash that caused damage to the corner of a terraced property where the gas entered the building.

It happened in the area of the hospital and school on Birks Road, they said.

They were sent to make the area safe as Nothern Gas Network officers capped off the gas.

They said it was reported at 11.50am, and they stayed for an hour and a half to ensure that everything was safe.

NWAS attended to 'check over the casualty', the spokesperson added, but said further details about the driver's condition couldn't be shared.

NWAS has been approached for a comment.
