The opening contest on the card sees a field of 12 head to the start for the class five handicap hurdle, which will be run over the long three-mile trip (12.00). Preference in the opener heads the way of Keppel Queen for trainer Jonjo O’Neill, who took a big step forward on handicap debut at Chepstow recently with a second so is a big player up in trip, which should suit. Trainer Ian Duncan-trained Adveram is the chief threat, off the mark last time out at Ayr and has a 4lb hike in the weights to shoulder here.
Ten runners will tackle the three-mile handicap chase at 12.30 to mark race two of the afternoon, where the Rebecca Menzies-trained Boomslang looks to be the play having delivered a fine round of jumping on chase debut at Downpatrick and then backed that up with a close second at Newcastle and should find this right-handed track to liking. Of his rivals, Lady In The Park was a close fourth at Wetherby on chase debut and a return to a further trip here should suit the Lucinda Russell-trained six-year-old.
Race three of the afternoon is an 11-runner maiden hurdle in division one of class four (1.03) and Irish raider Ira Hayes, trained by John McConnell, looks the one to beat having been successful in his second career start in bumpers at Wexford and looked one to do well going over obstacles, while division two of the same discipline (1.33) could see McConnell bring up a quickfire double with Kevin’s Pride, an impressive winner of a Kilbeggan bumper on debut that is another raider who looks well-suited to heading over timber.
A veterans’ handicap chase for horses aged ten and older is race five of the day (2.05) and six runners are set to take on the two miles and three furlong trip. Greystoke trainer Nicky Richards has a good hand here with Marown, who hasn’t won since his novice days but held form well last season, never finishing out of the top three in six runs and runs well fresh so is well in with a chance here. Flic Ou Voyou was a scorer at Newcastle last time out so is very much the main danger.
Epic West has joined a good trainer in Jamie Snowden off the back of a point-to-point win in March and he rates as the selection in race six on Carlisle’s card (2.40) in the class four novices’ hurdle, while the penultimate race of the meeting (3.15) can go the way of Walk On Quest for Lucinda Russell, arriving to Carlisle off the back of a career-best win at Kelso last time out 24 days ago and can go in again despite a 5lb rise in the weights.
Finally, the card comes to a close with a class four handicap hurdle over the two mile and one furlong distance (3.49), with preference in the finale heading the way of Bringbackmemories for trainer Ian Jardine, a useful winner when last seen over hurdles and a four-time winner on the Flat in 2024 so he is very much respected heading back over hurdles.
