Temperatures have dropped significantly in Cumbria in the past few days, with cold weather expected as we approach the Christmas period.
Cold weather can make some health problems worse and even lead to serious complications. This is especially true if you have a long term health condition or are over 65.
Therefore, it is incredibly important to protect yourself and ensure that you continue to fulfil a healthy lifestyle, despite the challenges that the cold mornings and nights bring in Cumbria.
The North Cumbria Integrated Care suggest that the flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from flu. It is a safe and effective vaccine and is offered every year on the NHS to help protect people.
If you are over the age of 65, pregnant, have a long-term health condition or are immunosuppressed, then you also qualify for a free flu vaccine via the NHS.
It is also recommended that anyone at a high risk of contracting Covid, should consider having a seasonal booster jab.
Staying warm is essential if you want to avoid winter colds and flu, and there are Warm Spot venues in all corners of the county, operating from village halls, community centres, churches, libraries, pubs, and sports centres.
Some winter warm spots are open every day and some just a few hours a week. Everyone is welcome and you will not need to give any explanation of why you are there.
The NHS also encourages people to check in on their elderly relatives, friends and neighbours in the winter months, and to help keep their food and essential item stocks high in case it is too cold for them to leave the house.
Meanwhile, with snow hitting the UK this month, the Red Cross suggest investing in a snow shovel or a supply of gritting salt, to help keep driveways and roads clear and reduce the chances of someone slipping.
The winter blues can also take a huge toll on your mental health, so please check in with your local GP if you are feeling anxious, stressed or depressed.
