AS the National Lottery celebrates its 30th birthday we have taken a look at some of the Cumbrian winners who have 'hit the jackpot' over the last three decades.

This week, marked exactly 30 years on from the first ever momentous draw taking place on November, 19 1994.

The Pirelli Tyres worker immediately handed in his notice at work after his £2million win back in January 2022.

Ian and Sandra, 55, said at the time they would use the winnings to pay for an operation on their Labrador/Staff rescue dog Meg.

Speaking at the time, Ian said: “I don’t think I have even seen that many zeros. I kept questioning, is this really £2million? I immediately phoned work and said to them I wouldn’t be in that day … adding, actually I don’t think I will be in this week, or actually ever again!

The Penrith woman won £370,000 on The National Lottery's Lotto draw in 2013.

Speaking to the News and Star previously, she said: "We had friends over that evening so it wasn’t until they left that we checked the numbers. My husband, Stephen, shouted in from the living room that we had three numbers and we had won £10, then it went to four numbers and I thought we could maybe go on holiday with the money. But then he said we had matched five numbers – I didn’t believe him at all, we thought we had won about £20,000 which would have been amazing."

Carlisle woman Karen is another lucky winner. She bagged herself £100,000 on a National Lottery Instant Win game in 2020.

 

As well as booking a holiday she spent money on her sons and grandsons, making sure everyone has been "absolutely spoilt."

The former part-time retail sales assistant from Ulverston, won a whopping £1m on the EuroMillions.

First on the list for the couple was to buy a new car, a Mercedes, later deciding to build their own dream home.

Speaking previously to the News and Star, Helen said: "“We are definitely still the same people as we were before our win – we have the same interests and values but we’re just able to enjoy life that little bit more. We know we can provide for our family and their future, which is what it’s all about.”

The Distington woman won £300,000 on a National Lottery Scratchcard back in 2014, and is shown celebrating with her fiance Richard Dunn.

The couple from Morton, Carlisle won £1 million on the EuroMillions back in 2015.
