We're highlighting the shortlisted coffee shops in our competition in the News & Star. Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues.

The Buttered Cat has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of the ten finalists in its 'Best Coffee Shop 2024' award.

The coffee shop is located in Carlisle's Kinmont Arcade and is run by owner Andrew Davenport who opened the cafe in March 2024.

After being informed that The Buttered Cat had been nominated by News & Star readers to feature in the final ten of the 'Best Coffee Shop 2024' award Andrew was on hand to express his delight.

He said:  "It’s an unexpected honour to have been nominated for the Best Coffee Shop 2024 since the cafe is still so new to the area compared to other incredible local businesses.

"I think it goes to show how well received the cafe has been and how lucky we are to have the customers we have."

For Andrew, The Buttered Cat has seen success in such a short period of time due to its commitment to its customers and the way it has embraced the wider local business community in the centre of Carlise.

He said: "We’re always getting feedback from customers that they love the cafe and receive a warm welcome when they come in.

"Jenna and Lexy are very good at remembering their regular orders and will have them started before the customer needs to ask, it’s little things like that, that people really enjoy and bring customers back again.

"Opening the Cafe in Treasury Court has really opened my eyes to what a hidden gem the area is as it’s home to some incredible independent businesses that I couldn’t imagine not existing now, it’s a vibrant growing corner of the city that is definitely worth a visit if you’d like to support local."
