A group of students from William Howard School in Brampton have enjoyed a trip to the National Esports Centre.

The group of year nine girls from the secondary school visited the National Esports Centre in Sunderland on Wednesday, November 20.

During the trip, the students were able to find out more about careers associated with esports as well as make use of the centre's state-of-the-art gaming computers which the students used to create their own virtual worlds and enjoy a match of Rocket League.

Writing on social media after the trip, William Howard School said: "Wednesday entailed a visit to the National Esports Centre in snowy Sunderland for a group of Year 9 girls.

"They spent some time researching the roles that are associated with esports – and there are a lot. With females and non-binary people as half of the population, holding only about a third of the jobs in the esports sector, there was a lot to explore.

"After their research, they hit the computers. A lot of ‘wow’ responses indicated our girls felt that they had died and gone to heaven – a room of full-spec gaming computers just for the participants.

"Then they coded actions for the characters in the games they had begun.

"We came back to William Howard with lots of ideas about how to develop these experiences to include more of our students."

After the students returned they were presented with certificates in a school assembly to make their participation in the trip.
