AVIATION enthusiasts are being asked to help a museum across the Borders create a new Cold War exhibition.

Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum hopes to raise £10,000 after securing planning permission for a new building to house the exhibition.

The new building will be home to the museum's recently acquired Westland Lynx helicopter and SEPECAT Jaguar.

The SEPECAT Jaguar flew with the RAF in Germany during the Cold War and came from RAF Cosford.

The museum said that RAF Heritage has played an important role in their journey so far, also helping in obtaining the Westland Lynx helicopter from MOD Lyneham.

So far, over £1,000 has been contributed by donors but more donations are required to help get the museum 'over the line'.

A spokesperson from the museum said: "The building will provide a home for a unique display, covering not only Royal Air Force and Army Air Corps during the Cold War, but also the role of the Royal Observer Corps, Civil Defence and the impact the cold war had on everyone’s lives as they lived through historic events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

"Please help us in whatever way you can to ensure that we can reach our goal and create something that will educate, inform and engage with a wide audience. Whether the audience will be remembering how it impacted them, or learning about it for the first time, it is a story that needs to be told."
