A PROPOSAL to 'enhance the customer experience' at Penrith train station has been put forward.

Avanti West Coast Limited have submitted an Listed Building Consent application to upgrade and modernise the toilet facilities on Platform 1 at Penrith railway station.

The train operator’s plan is part of a wider project to renovate the facilities at 'a number of stations' across its network.

Strzala Architects were tasked to design the construction of the works, which, according to the Design and Access Statement, includes the installation of new drinking water fountains at the stations.

The statement says: "The refurbishments aim to modernise the existing toilets in order to enhance the customer experience, and to make energy and water savings by installing new lower energy LED light fittings and lower water usage sanitaryware appliances."

The scope of the proposal includes the accessible, male and female toilets, which are on the ground floor of the Grade II Listed main station building, as well as the associated corridor.

The statement says: "The proposals seek to replace existing contemporary finishes, fixtures and fittings only with no original or heritage fabric proposed for removal or alterations.

"The designed works do not threaten or otherwise harm any original building fabric or heritage features.

"The works do not alter the external appearance or facades of the existing building.

"It has been shown that this application will cause minimal harm to the heritage asset and will provide a new sustainable feature to the station."
