A new centre for neurodivergent young people has officially opened.

The New Leaf Centre, on the outskirts of Penrith, provides therapeutic support and education for children aged between 11 and 17 with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, and welcomed parents, professionals, and council representatives to its grand opening.

The centre's open day aimed to showcase its focused support and education for neurodivergent young people, and the attendance of council representatives from Westmorland and Furness and Cumberland councils, parents, and professionals, was a testament to the centre's necessity.

Visitors were presented with the centre's adapted curriculum and caring environment, which caters to the specific needs of its students.

The councils' representatives applauded the initiative for addressing a significant community need.

The centre offers several ASDAN courses and qualifications, which are beneficial in reengaging and boosting the confidence of learners who are unable to attend mainstream education.

These internationally recognised courses encourage personal, social, and vocational development, providing learners with essential life skills.

The centre also provides Functional Skills qualifications in English and mathematics.

These qualifications are designed to be practical and accessible, allowing students to progress at their own pace and gain recognised certifications.

Beyond academics, attendees were introduced to the centre’s therapeutic provision, including its animal companions.

These pets play a crucial role in supporting students’ emotional wellbeing, helping them form connections and develop emotional regulation skills in a safe environment.

Vicky Hunter, the director of New Leaf Centre, said: "We are thrilled by the turnout and the positive response from everyone who attended.

"Today is a celebration of all the hard work that has gone into creating a space where neurodivergent young people can thrive.

The New Leaf Centre aims to be a key resource for families and professionals seeking an alternative provision that prioritises personalised approaches, understanding, and growth.

The open day was a visible display of the centre’s commitment to 'empowering young people' through 'innovative programmes and compassionate care'.
