Two police constables been commended for helping save a woman's life in Workington.

Constables Martine Symes and Gareth Cousins were recognised by the Chief Constable for their life-saving intervention on March 26, 2024.

They were approached by a passer-by who had found a woman in her early 20s, unconscious and not breathing.

The officers immediately contacted the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and began CPR, managing to get the woman breathing again.

Her breath eventually became shallow and she stopped breathing once more.

The constables recommenced CPR and were able to revive her a second time, just as the ambulance arrived to take her to hospital.

The woman recovered in hospital and later reached out to the police, expressing her gratitude to the officers, whom her family believe saved her life that day.

Inspector Dan Hindle, who put the officers forward for the commendation, said: "The officers were confronted with someone who was showing no signs of life.

"They showed remarkable composure given the circumstances and acted swiftly and decisively to help save the woman's life.

"Their actions reflect well not only on the Constabulary but on policing as a whole."
