THE owners working to revive one of England's most iconic cafés were left to deal with a "van load" of foam insulation illegally dumped on their property.

The waste was discovered near the Hartside Cafe, Alston, and reported to Westmorland and Furness Council on Tuesday, November 14.

Work is underway to rebuild the iconic cafe on the well-known Hartside Pass viewpoint after it was destroyed by fire in 2018.

An investigation was carried out by the council the day after the waste was discovered, but no evidence was found linking the waste to its dumper.

As the waste was dumped on private land, the responsibility for its removal falls on the landowner.

The council advises the public to report any waste they find, ensuring they include as much information as possible, such as the exact location and, if possible, a photo.

The council also advised residents to check with tradespeople or companies that they employ to ensure they have the required permits and contracts in place to dispose of waste appropriately and legally.

Residents were also warned to be cautious of rogue traders offering cheap "tip-runs" as an alternative to licensed waste companies or skips. If fly-tipping can be traced back to an address or individual, they may be liable for a fine or prosecution.
