A YELLOW weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for Cumbria ahead of strong winds and heavy rain in the coming days.
Winds of up to 70mph can be expected along the county's coastline from 3pm tomorrow (December 5) until around 6am on Sunday (December 8).
"Westerly or northwesterly winds will increase across Northern Ireland, parts of Scotland, north Wales, northern England, the north Midlands and East Anglia during Thursday afternoon and evening," the Met Office report states.
"Inland gusts of 40-50 mph are possible, with perhaps 60-70 mph along exposed coasts, especially through the North Channel and Irish Sea, causing some travel disruption.
"Strong gusts will also be associated with heavy showers which move through at times."
People are being advised of a “danger to life” from flying debris as well as from large waves at the coast.
The Met Office is also warning of possible delays to road, rail and ferry travel during the poor weather.
The Met Office advises: "If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves," a spokesperson states.
"Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
