WE shared the news that a new Tesco Express store is set to open in Carlisle city centre in the former House of Fraser site, it has been confirmed.

Following the closure of the retailer’s Victoria Viaduct store, the Tesco property team have been searching for a viable space for a new convenience store.

After a private developer acquired the freehold of the building on English Street, Tesco has agreed a lease for a brand-new Express store serving the local community.

Here's what readers had to say.

Stephanie Millar said: "There’ll always be the ones with something negative to say on this. Personally I think it’s brilliant, it’s been a huge miss since its doors were closed! More jobs, a lovely building occupied instead of rotting away and so handy for a lot of people! What’s not to like."

Louise Nugent said: "Great for people that don't drive and workers wanting bits and pieces."

Joni Mckay said: "This is a godsend for many people. Not everyone has a car and need something central. Those complaining about parking can use the supermarkets out of town."

Natalie Bowman agreed. She said: "Brilliant for the elderly community who need a supermarket in the city centre. Money well spent."

Lucy Carrick added: "This will be great for the city centre, and if you want parking go to the big one at Rosehill."

The Facebook page of the Old Fire Station said: "Great news and hugely needed for the city centre. Another positive step forward."
